It is in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, that we start our Camino.

Pilgrim passports and the shell

Pilgrim passports and the symbolic shell.

The Camino Frances, the classic and most popular Way of St. James, consists of  a distance of 478 miles which the average person walks in about 35 days. From Barcelona we take a train to Pamplona where we meet up with our son, Bryan, who manages to sneak his way in on our trip and for which we are secretly thrilled. From Pamplona we pay 120 Euro for a 90 minute taxi ride to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to spend the night and contemplate an early start.

In the foothills of the Pyrenees we thank our host, hoist our packs, and start our pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia!
