Punalu’u. It took us a while to wrap our tongues around this foreign sounding word but it has quickly become a favorite of ours for two reasons: the black sand beach; and, the bakery.
We found Punalu’u Black Sand Beach Park conveniently within walking distance of our condo.
On our very first visit we were enchanted with the trademark black sand, the rocky coastline, the lily pond, sloping beach, crashing waves, and the enclosed nesting area often full of the Hawaiian green sea turtles basking in the sun. What a treat! People were talking about swimming with the turtles. Our ears perked up. Can you imagine?
It took us a few days to discover the Punalu’u Bake Shop; but, once discovered it cannot be ignored. We dare not disclose how many malasadas we have consumed on the Big Island. Nom nom nom.
